Resistance, yield and quality in tomato – sometimes you can have it all!

Tomato Brown Rugose Fruit Virus (ToBRFV) is a devastating virus threatening growers’ existences across the globe. When this pathogen first appeared in 2015 in the Middle East, we at BASF did not close our eyes towards the possibility that this could become a global problem and started research on resistance right away. Today, we are proud to offer more than  25 ToBRFV-resistant tomato varieties. We are the only seeds company with a ToBRFV resistant portfolio covering all segments of this most consumed vegetable in the world.

Now that the imminent danger of losing your entire harvest can largely be averted with our resistant portfolio, our priority is to offer resistant varieties and do not compromise on other essential traits such as yield, taste and shelf-life. We aim to ensure that our resistant portfolio encompasses the benefits that our conventional portfolio provided to growers. To put it clearly: We do not want to achieve resistance by compromising on other important traits such as yield, taste and shelf-life.

In a market where rugose-resistant seeds will become the norm, we endeavor to maintain our differentiator by delivering high-quality seeds that cater to all aspects of tomato cultivation. Our ongoing efforts in improving our varieties aim to make them even stronger against the virus while addressing other customer needs.

Customer feedback is crucial to us and we strive to incorporate it into our development process. For instance, when we received the feedback that while happy with the resistance of Azovian, some customers found that the size was a bit too small, we worked on a variety with the same characteristics but larger size.

For this season, we have a high demand for our seeds. Right now, our customers are already placing orders for next year, because they want to make sure to get their share of our high-quality resistant tomato seeds.

At BASF, we remain committed to supporting growers worldwide with innovative solutions tailored to their unique challenges. Our comprehensive portfolio of ToBRFV-resistant tomatoes reflects our dedication to providing effective options. We continuously strive for improvement, ensuring that our offerings evolve to meet the evolving needs of growers.
