Hailing from Thadagavadi village, Karnataka, Prasanna Krishnegowda is a seasoned farmer with 21 years of experience under his belt. He cultivates Armour on 15 guntha of his 4acre field alongside US 800 tomato & Don cucumber varieties by Nunhems. Talking about Armour, he says, “I am extremely happy with Armour. Armour is known for its high yield and unmatched resistance to viruses. “Virus resistance of Armour is excellent! Compared to other varieties, even the tolerance is exceptional,” Prasanna said, resounding the claim.

“It gives almost 50% higher yield than other hybrids that I've used before.”

The performance of Armour is startling, especially in the rainy season, explained Prasanna. Its standout fruit quality is accentuated by the dark colour making it the go-to variety amongst traders. With a picking interval of 8-9 days, Prasanna harvested more than 1 tonnes of fresh chilli after initial 3-4 pickings of half a tonne each. The yield skyrocketed and paved the way for greater profits. The seeds sustained 25-30 pickings, he said. This longevity of the seed took Prasanna by surprise. With 1 lakh investment, he earned 2.5 lakh, a massive 250% profit!

Armour –  Suitable for fresh green and red dry

Srinivas Rao is a progressive farmer from Nagpur. In a flourishing field of 40 acres, he harvests vegetables and fruits like chilli, tomato, bitter gourd and muskmelon. In 2020, he started cultivating Armour chilli, a variety from Nunhems on 4 acres. "I have had a wonderful experience with Armour. It has early picking; the fruit quality is exceptional, and the market response was equally good. As a result, I have decided to continue with Armour this year as well," he said.

The Nagpur market, he explains, prefers fresh chilli over dried chilli. Armour yields 75-80% fresh green chillies, making it the ideal choice for him. Armour has been accepted widely by traders & consumers a like. He sold green chilli at INR 20-25 per kg, and red chilli at INR 150 per kg.

Armour's strength is "early picking cycle, its shine and the fact that there are no leaves that grow along with the fruit which keeps the stem intact during the picking process." Most chilli varieties allow picking of 20-25 kg in a single day, with Armour, Srinivas Rao picked 60 kg chilli on an average in a day, thereby reducing labour cost drastically.

In the past two years, Srinivas Rao has had many farmers who visited his field before sowing Armour in their fields. He has also had traders from Delhi's Azadpur mandi visit his farm & buy Armour chilli directly from him. Hailing from the weather-sensitive plains of Maharashtra, Swapnil is a progressive farmer. In a 6 acre field, he sows musk melon, onion, jowar, wheat, apple, gourd (tinda) and Armour chilli by Nunhems. Talking about Armour, he says, "Armour has been a massive success for me, thanks to its colour, size, pungency & fruit weight." Even with a 10-12 days picking cycle, he harvested 1200-1400 kilograms of fresh chilli in every picking. This amounted to huge profits. "Armour is the first choice of people in the Baramati market. The striking green colour and shine make it extremely attractive," he added.

Armour has a bunch-setting and lower flower dropping instances. Thus, it gives an average of 300-400 kg more chilli in every picking cycle for the same number of fruits. Even when Swapnil had lost all hopes due to heavy rains in his region, the yield remained unaffected. "It is a true testimony to the rigidity and versatility of the seed!," he says.

Armour is the Rockstar of the local markets. Swapnil says, "Selling Armour has always been very easy. Each time I went to the market, the entire produce was sold off in less than one hour. I never had to wait for the markets to close." From selling chilli at a rate of 27 rupees per kg in Mumbai's Vashi mandi to 45 rupees per kg in Baramati, Swapnil has come a long way with Armour. Chennaiah is a seasoned farmer from Jogulamba, Gadwal, district in Telangana. In a flourishing field of 12 acres, he cultivates Armour, a chilli variety by Nunhems in 2 acres of his land. In 2020, Telangana witnessed heavy rainfall. While Chennaiah had lost all hopes of any profitable yield, he still harvested an average of 40 quintals per acre. This created a sense of security and increased Chennaiah’s confidence in Armour. He aims to harvest a dry yield of at least 50 quintals per acre in 2021.              

In his own words, Chennaiah exclaimed, "No matter the weather or the virus, Armour is a tough variety in chilli and always gives a good yield." With more than 20 years of experience in chilli cultivation, Bajit Bhoe is an established farmer from the village of Chibra in Odisha. His association with Nunhems is a testimony to the versatility of the hot pepper variety, Armour. Bajit allocated 1 acre of land to cultivate Armour. He expressed, "I have been growing hot pepper for 20 years, but the yield received from Armour surprised me."

Hailing from Andukuru village in Guntur, Vasireddy Nageshwar Rao is a proud owner of a massive 30 acres field. He grows Armour chilli by Nunhems alongside cotton and paddy. In 2020, he cultivated Armour chilli on 3 acres of his land but doubled it in 2021. "I was thrilled with the good yield and decided to cultivate Armour chilli on 6 acres of land this year," he said.

Armour gave him a record yield of 52 quintals per acre. Thrilled by the sheer volume, Nageshwar said, "No other variety has ever given this much yield." He added, "the best part of Armour chilli is its tolerance to the virus.
