Okra Farmer Success Stories

Sarvottam - A Seed That Stands True to Its Name

Dhansukhbhai Patel owns a flourishing 10-acre field in his village Delvada, Gujarat. He has been associated with Nunhems for a decade now. Over the years, he has sown multiple seed varieties such as Shakti & Sarika. Across 3 acres, he grows Sarvottam, an okra hybrid by Nunhems. He calls Sarvottam a “high-yielding seed variety that sells instantly in the market.”

Fixating on this point, he spoke vivaciously of his experience with the traders in the market. “Sarvottam sells instantly at a higher price every single time. Traders are very keen to get their hands on the fruit,” he said. Sarvottam is characterized by long pentagonal fruits that bear an attractive dark green colour. It has high yield & exceptional fruit quality giving farmers the added advantage of increased profits.

Dhansukhbhai speaks highly of Sarvottam. Talking about the yield & picking cycles, he mentioned that the yield increases exponentially after the second or third cycle. In other varieties, the yield increases after the eighth or ninth cycle, he added. The difference is such that he was able to harvest more than 200 kgs of Okra per acre.

Sarvottam has brought along massive profits for Dhansukhbhai. He purchased a bike, a four-wheeler and got his son married to his heart's content.

Looking at his flourishing field, neighbouring farmers followed his trail. “All the farmers in my area now sow Sarvottam,” he said. Dhansukhbhai is proud to be associated with Nunhems. He says, “Every variety of Nunhems sells instantly at a higher price.”

Selvam Made Me Debt-Free!

M Senthil is the proud owner of a 7-acre field in Usilampatti, Madurai. His journey with Nunhems began with Samrat & Shikhar, two well-known Okra hybrids. He has expanded his Okra portfolio and sows Selvam in his field. The Usilampatti market is a major Okra hotspot. To make the most of this opportunity, Senthil confides in Selvam.

He calls Selvam a “seed that has a high longevity.” It has a high yield and possesses outstanding fruit quality. Selvam is an okra that “sells instantly in the market,” he added. Even the traders have shown immense trust in Selvam. It is considered a dependable product and gets the first preference. Even when the market rate was as low as ₹3 per kg, Selvam fetched a price of ₹15 per kg. He further said that when the market price is above ₹15 per kg, Selvam earns ₹6 more per kg.

M Senthil calls Selvam his trusted source of sustained income. The longevity of the seed & high yield has helped him generate massive profits. “Selvam has made me debt-free”, he shared joyfully. It is now helping him invest in his future.

M Senthil is an ardent advocate of Nunhems. He calls Nunhems the only company that does not force the farmer to buy seeds. Instead, he adds, the team gives him complete freedom to choose a seed variety & provides regular market updates to make a wise decision. “Nunhems focuses on maximizing the farmer’s profits & not just sales,” says Senthil.

Singham - A Seed That Stands True to Its Name!

With over 15 years of farming experience under his belt, Yuvraj is a seasoned farmer. His association with Nunhems traces back to his early years in the field. He has been growing Singham, a variety of Okra in his 40-acre field alongside other vegetables. He has also had first-hand experiences with Sonal, Sarika, Shakti, and Samrat seed varieties by Nunhems in the past.

“The fruit quality of Singham is unmatched and exceptionally consistent”, Yuvraj mentioned. When most varieties were impacted by the Leaf Curl Virus, Singham’s produce remained unaffected. He harvests an average of 15-20 quintals of market-ready okra with an alternate day picking cycle. Given the consistency & high yield, Yuvraj exports most of the produce. This has also helped him generate greater profits. Even after an average of 48 hours of travel, the fruit quality of Singham was the same. This has made Singham the market leader.

“There is no competitor of Singham,” he added. The fruit has an unprecedented weight. Such is the demand in the market that exporters stand in line to procure their share of Singham.

Elated with his experience, Yuvraj is a fervent believer in Nunhems. He looks forward to strengthening his association by extending his portfolio. He considers Nunhems one of the only companies that provide seeds at a fair price to the farmer.

With the profits earned from Singham, Yuvraj purchased a home in Jalgaon so that his children could pursue further education.

Shivansh Khub Bhalo!

Hailing from West Bengal, Shailo Bag is a progressive farmer. With more than 12 years of experience, he is considered a stalwart in his village. Over the years, he has had first-hand experiences with Singham, Rushaan, & Armour seed varieties by Nunhems. Inspired by the history of successful yields, he now sows Shivansh, a variety of Okra seeds.

“Shivansh Khub Bhalo” were his first words as he shared his year-long experience with the variety. He highlighted that the short internodal distance resulted in a higher number of fruits per plant. This means a higher yield per acre compared to other varieties.

“Shivansh has a short-medium height, a striking green colour, and great fruit quality”, Shailo Bag shared. It has become the market favourite and sells with ease. Talking about the picking cycle, he mentioned that in the summer season, the picking cycle is between 45-50 days & 55-60 days in the winter season. With each picking cycle, the harvest increased. “The highest was a three-quintal yield in a single picking”, he exclaimed.

“There have been no virus problems in Shivansh till now”, says Shailo. The traders always give it the first preference. Shivansh has brought along greater profits for Shailo. This is greatly helping him to facilitate his son’s education.

Shailo Bag is a key opinion leader (KOL) farmer. Calling himself a firm believer of Nunhems, he actively recommends Nunhems varieties to his neighbouring farmers & is eager to expand his association.
