New Race Bremia lactucae (BI: 10US) Nominated

Bremia lactucae is the casual agent of downy mildew in lettuce, and it is genetically variable. Even within a single lettuce field, several different races can be present. Monitoring the evolution of new strains of Bremia is important to breeders and growers to stay on top of disease resistance. As of July 1st, 2025 a new strain of Bremia has been nominated within the United States, BI: 10US.

As we strive to provide best-in-class solutions to our customers, we work hard to test our varieties against these new races. Together with our Breeding and R&D teams, we continuously monitor the development of Bremia lactucae. Disease resistance is a key component of our breeding program in order to provide a portfolio with robust and reliable resistance to our customers.

Along with genetic resistance, BASF | Nunhems emphasizes the importance of an integrated crop management program. Chemical control and hygiene measures give an additional protection to resistance lettuce crops, which will lower the chance of disease, and further limit the development of new Bremia races.

Current resistance information for the lettuce range including BI: 10US can be found on our website:
