A Delicious Way to Hydrate
There is probably no other crop associated with fun-in-the-sun moments like a watermelon is. When we think of watermelons, we think of summer, vacation, happiness, and easygoing moments with friends and family. That said, watermelons have had quite a purposeful career. Watermelons were historically popular in countries where access to safe drinking water was scarce. With 95 percent water content, eating watermelon is an excellent way to hydrate while enjoying life's priceless moments.
Today, in addition to traditional-sized watermelons, we offer many high-value segments that cater to consumers preferences around the globe. When breeding watermelons, consumer traits such as size, color, convenience, and taste are at the forefront of our attention. Agronomic traits such as high yield, quality, and resistance levels are also imperative characteristics for our breeding process. No one maintains the balance between consumer interest and grower efficiency like the breeding team at BASF's Vegetable Seeds Business.
